X bookmark folders: Premium, and the ways around it

Bookmark folders are a paid X feature, starting on the Basic tier. A free account gets one long list. Folders are useful. They are also still just pointers, and they do not save the post if it is deleted.

What are bookmark folders on X?

By default, every bookmark goes into one reverse-chronological list at x.com/i/bookmarks. Folders split that list into named groups — reporting, recipes, a project — so you are not scrolling the entire history to find one post. The post stays in the main list as well. A folder is a view, not a second copy.

That distinction matters. Deleting the original post, or the author locking the account, empties the bookmark whether or not it sat in a folder. Folders organise the pointers. They do not archive the text. Folders are private, like the rest of your bookmarks. Nobody else can see them, as explained in can people see your bookmarks on X?

Do you need X Premium?

You need a paid plan. X’s own Premium description lists bookmark folders under Basic, the cheapest of the three tiers (Basic, Premium and Premium+), alongside editing posts and longer posts. You do not have to buy the middle or top tier just to make a folder. A free account can bookmark, and cannot create a folder.

What you pay depends on the country and on whether you subscribe on the web or in an app store. Those prices move. This page will not quote one. Open X’s Premium page while logged in and read the tier that includes folders before you subscribe for that reason alone.

How to create and manage folders

On a paid account, open Bookmarks. The page offers a way to add a folder — X has used a New folder control there — and the bookmark icon on a post lets you choose which folders receive it. Names are yours. You can move a post between folders later from the same list.

The labels are not stable across the website, iOS and Android, and X rearranges them. If a tutorial says “tap the ribbon, then the folder icon” and that icon is not there, check two things before assuming you are doing it wrong: that the account actually has a paid plan, and that you are looking at Bookmarks rather than Likes. Likes have never been folders.

Limits and quirks

X does not publish a maximum number of folders or a maximum number of bookmarks. Do not trust a specific cap you saw in a blog post; the bookmark limit guide explains what is actually known. What users run into instead is practical. A long main list can stop loading older posts as you scroll. Search, where the client offers it, matches words rather than meaning, and has not been available on every app.

Folders also do not remove the filing work. You name them, and you choose one at save time. Six months later the taxonomy you invented (“misc”, “read later”, “important”) is the thing you have to remember. Folders are a good fit for a handful of stable topics. They are a bad fit for news, where the question is when, not which drawer.

Ways to organise bookmarks without X Premium

On X, you can’t. The free tier is one list. Outside X, you have options that do not require that subscription. A notes app or a general bookmark manager will hold the URLs for nothing, or for its own fee, and will lose the text when the post is deleted. Print to PDF and screenshots keep a private copy and refuse to be organised. Search on X, if your client shows a search box on Bookmarks, only helps you find words that are still in the live post.

None of those is “folders, but free, inside X”. They are different tools. If the reason you wanted folders was to find a post again, a searchable copy of the text works better than another set of names. If the reason was to avoid paying X, a notes app is the honest free answer, with the limits above.

Organising saves in WHT.day

WHT.day is not an X Premium add-on; it is a subscription of its own. It files each save on the day you saved it, in a news archive you can open by date, and the search looks through the text. A post and the article it was reacting to sit on the same day without you inventing a folder called “that story”.

You still choose what to save. The extension does not import your X folders, because those folders are not something X exports. The organisation you get is the date, plus search, plus the nightly digest of that day’s saves.

Questions

Bookmark folders, answered

Do you need X Premium for bookmark folders?
You need a paid X plan. X's Premium page lists bookmark folders on Basic, the lowest paid tier, as well as on Premium and Premium+. A free account can still bookmark posts, and they all land in one list. Prices vary by country and change, so check X's current Premium page rather than a number you saw in a screenshot.
Is there a free way to organise X bookmarks?
On X itself, a free account gets the single list. Off X, you can keep URLs in a notes app or a bookmark manager, or save the post's text into an archive that files by date. Those are free of the X subscription. A notes app is free. An archive such as WHT.day is a paid subscription — it is not an X Premium feature, and it is not a forever-free folder system.
Can one post be in more than one folder?
On paid accounts, X lets you file a post into folders and still keeps it in the main bookmarks list. The exact control — a New folder button, or a choice on the bookmark icon — has moved around between the website and the apps. If a control described in an old screenshot is missing, look on the Bookmarks page for the account you are actually using.

File by the day, not the folder

A folder remembers where you put the link

WHT.day remembers the post. Save it once and it is filed on that day, next to the articles you saved with it, and it stays readable if the original disappears.
