Guide · X bookmarks

Can people see your bookmarks on X?

No. Nobody else can see your bookmarks on X, the platform formerly called Twitter. Your followers can't browse them, the person who wrote the post isn't told, and there is no setting that makes your bookmark list public. The one thing anyone can see is a post's total bookmark count, which shows how many people saved it but never who they were.

What other people can and can't see

Can others see it?
Your list of bookmarksNo
Which posts you bookmarkedNo
A notification that you bookmarked their postNo. The author isn't notified.
How many times a post has been bookmarkedYes. A public total, with no names attached.
Your bookmark foldersNo. Folders are private too.

Are bookmarks private on X?

Yes. Bookmarks have been private since Twitter launched them in 2018, and they stayed private through the rename to X. No app or website can look up someone else's bookmarks, because X doesn't offer a way to do it. X's Help Center page About Bookmarks says: "No, Bookmarks are private and are only viewable to you within your X account."

That makes a bookmark the quietest way to save a post. A like is visible to the post's author, and a repost puts the post on your profile. A bookmark does neither.

Are bookmarks public on X?

No, but part of the bookmark system is. In March 2023, Twitter started showing a bookmark count on posts (first on iOS), next to replies, reposts and likes. Anyone who opens the post can see that number. It's a tally only. On your own posts you can see who liked them, but nobody, the author included, can see who bookmarked a post.

That count is where most of the confusion comes from. People see a number go up on their post and assume the savers can be identified. They can't.

Are Twitter bookmarks public?

Twitter bookmarks and X bookmarks are the same feature. Twitter was renamed X in 2023 and the bookmark rules didn't change. Everything on this page applies whether you still call it Twitter or not.

Can the author see that I bookmarked their post?

No. The author can see the total number of bookmarks on their post, and that's all. Bookmarking sends no notification, doesn't appear in the author's activity, and isn't shown on your profile.

How bookmarks compare with likes and reposts

ActionWho can see that you did it
BookmarkOnly you
LikeThe post's author. X made likes private to everyone else in June 2024.
RepostEveryone who can see your profile
Quote postEveryone who can see your profile

Do bookmark folders or a paid X plan change any of this?

No. Bookmark folders are a paid feature on X, and they are as private as the main list. Paying for X changes how you can organise bookmarks, not who can see them. About X Premium lists bookmark folders under Basic, and the higher tiers include Basic. How folders work and how to organise bookmarks without paying is in the bookmark folders guide.

How to see your bookmarks on X

In the app: tap your profile photo (top left) and choose Bookmarks.

On the web: click Bookmarks in the left sidebar, or go to x.com/i/bookmarks.

Bookmarks appear in one list, newest first. You need to be signed in to the account that made the bookmarks. A second account has its own separate list.

Private doesn't mean permanent

A bookmark is a pointer to a post, not a copy of it. If the author deletes the post, protects their account or is suspended, your bookmark has nothing left to show. Older bookmarks can also stop loading at the bottom of a long list. Both problems, and what you can and can't recover, are covered in why your Twitter bookmarks disappeared and is there a Twitter bookmark limit?.

X also has no export button for bookmarks. The options that do exist, and what each one really gives you, are in how to export Twitter bookmarks.

Keeping a copy of what you bookmark

If you want the post itself rather than a pointer to it, you need a copy that you hold. A screenshot or a PDF works for a few posts. For more than a few, WHT.day does it two ways:

  • X bookmark sync: connect your X account once with read-only access. WHT.day imports your recent bookmarks, then checks for new ones three times a day and saves each post's text, author and media. Each one is filed on the day you saved it.
  • The browser extension: saves the post you have open, in one click, into your personal news archive.

A copy saved this way stays in your archive if the original post is later deleted. WHT.day is $8 a month or $68 a year. See pricing.

Questions

X bookmarks, answered

Can people see your bookmarks on X?
No. Your bookmarks are visible only to you. Followers, profile visitors and the authors of the posts you saved can't see them. The only public part is each post's total bookmark count, which doesn't show who saved it.
Are bookmarks private on X?
Yes. X bookmarks are private and there is no setting to make them public. Bookmark folders, available on paid X plans, are private too.
Are bookmarks public on Twitter?
No. Twitter bookmarks and X bookmarks are the same feature, and they've been private since they launched in 2018.
Can someone see if I bookmarked their tweet?
No. The author sees that their post's bookmark count went up, but not who did it. Bookmarking sends no notification.
Can I make my bookmarks public?
Not on X. There is no public bookmarks page or sharing setting. To share what you saved, you'd repost or quote the posts, or collect them somewhere else.
How do I check my bookmarks on Twitter?
In the app, tap your profile photo and choose Bookmarks. On the web, open x.com/i/bookmarks or click Bookmarks in the sidebar.
Does X Premium let other people see my bookmarks?
No. Paid plans add bookmark folders, but folders stay private.
Can I export my X bookmarks?
X has no bookmark export button. X's "Download an archive of your data" is a backup of your account, not a simple list of your bookmarked posts with their content. A CSV from a third-party tool is usually a list of links. Saving the post itself, with its text, images and author, is what still exists after the original is deleted. See how to export Twitter bookmarks.
